Lawan’s Senate President Ambition Receives A Knock From Home

The aspiration of Senator Ahmed Lawan to lead the 9th Senate has received a knock as some group of people from his home state has associated with Senator Ali Ndume.
Ali Ndume, the Senator representing Borno South has stood firm with his aspiration despite the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) endorsing the candidature of Lawan.

A movement surfaced in Yobe State on Sunday calling on all aspiring senators for the Senate President to rest their aspiration and support Ali Ndume.

The group, with the name: “Yobe Support Group for Ndume”, on Sunday in a statement, signed by Comrade Abubakar Nguru, it’s Convener, said the ongoing bickering over selection and election of senate president in June would only be addressed amicably if justice and fairness is allowed.

He said the leadership choice of the party for the 9th Assembly is undemocratic, unacceptable by the majority of the party’s supporters.

Nguru described Lawan, who is the incumbent Senate Leader, as lacking in equal qualities and high commitment to good governance more than any of the names mentioned eyeing the position of Senate President.

He said Ndume has played a greater role at the National Assembly and even in the APC “more than pretender to the throne from the state.”

Nguru, though from Yobe, ask the people of neighbouring Borno State not to miss the opportunity of supporting Ndume for the number three position in the country as it may be hard to come by.

He said it is highly condemnable the decision of the APC to narrow the Senate President to an individual instead of the normal practice of opening it to all senators from the zone the position is zoned to.

He said the group though believe the zoning of the position is the best decision to have been taken but going further to anoint an individual without due consultation and consensus of the concerned zone is inappropriate and bias and can bring division among the members interested in occupying the seat.
He therefore advised the national body of the APC to make a U-turn on it earlier decision,  bring all heads together and make a proper choice that will be gladly accepted by all senators and members of the party at large in other to avoid  the occurrence of the  past mistake.

He said: “Let me use this medium to tell you that loyalty is the key word in politics, and Ndume has exhibited this severally.”
He said Ndume was the zonal director of the last presidential election for the party and he performed well and delivered his state and zone to the party.
He added that: “when he was the senate leader he fought for the position of the party which was represented by the bills sponsored by the executive arm of government.”
He equally said at a time when the Senate leadership was fighting the presidency and delaying passage of budget, Ndume was consistent and showed a lot of concern for the interests of Nigerians.

He said we need a positive and vibrant Assembly that will compliment the Executive arm to develop the economy and provide the needed infrastructure for Nigerians.
